2016 $25 Library Parliament
Built in the 19th century Gothic Revival style, the Library of Parliament is one of Canada's architectural gems. Its reading room is said to be the most beautiful room in Canada. Inside the circular building, the ornate woodwork and imposing dome attest to the artistic value and cultural significance of the building, as well as its historical heritage as the last vestige of the fire that destroyed the first Center Block in 1916.
The reverse design creates an impressive three-dimensional effect and depth made possible by the concave shape of the coin, which lends itself well to replicating the lavish interior decor and dome of the Library of Parliament. The unique vantage point from the base of the marble statue of Queen Victoria gives the viewer the impression of standing there, lifting their head to admire the dome and the height and spacious dimensions of the room. The finely carved pine shelves that surround the reading room are reproduced around the perimeter of the room on the reverse, and accentuate the 360-degree view effect. Finally, the application of an antique finish to the very high relief engraving highlights the extreme precision and masterful artistic craftsmanship that make this coin a numismatic masterpiece. On a banner at the bottom of the statue are engraved the commemorative dates “1876-2016”.
