The term "piedfort", or strong foot, appeared in France a few centuries ago and designated a heavyweight in the field of coinage; today, it is used to describe a piece whose thickness is exceptional. Inspired by renewed collector interest in its world-renowned bullion coins, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to release its first silver Maple Leaf piedfort.
In 1988, the Mint launched its silver Maple Leaf coin. Buoyed by the success of the first Gold Maple Leaf released nine years earlier, it quickly became the standard by which other bullion coins were measured.
