2009 5$ 80th Canada In Japan
The first Japanese immigrant arrived in Canada, in New Westminster, British Columbia, in 1877. Along with the increase in regular steamship services between Yokohama and Vancouver, the increase in the number of Japanese immigrants led Japan to establish a consulate in Vancouver.
As relations continued to develop, Japan established a legation in Ottawa in 1928 while Canada opened a diplomatic mission in Tokyo in 1929 - the country's first diplomatic office in Asia!
This year of 5 dollars therefore marks the 80th anniversary of Canada in Japan, an anniversary which is celebrated thanks to numerous events organized by various diplomatic and trade offices on both sides of the Pacific - a superb anniversary year which illustrates the plural interweaving of cultures Canadian and Japanese in a solid friendship.
